Chapter 14

Sloan

I’d slipped into the auditorium under the pretence that I wanted to see how the Lego Challenge was progressing, but I had another motive too—if the opportunity arose, I’d apologize to Tami for my unwarranted outburst at the Country Club. I’d mulled over my harsh words and Devin’s even harsher words and conceded that he was right, and I had to say sorry. It would be hard to explain, with no real excuse other than being a class one jerk. But I needed to try.

In only the second week of rehearsals, Tami’s performance was a standout, already so polished, her lines committed, making everyone around her look like the amateurs that they were. Being familiar with the story, I knew exactly what the scene entailed and I watched in morbid anticipation as I realized I was about to witness Romeo and Juliet’s insta-love first meeting and subsequent kiss. Liam had already gripped Tami’s hands like he’d just rescued her from a burning building. Why wasn’t the director yelling cut and telling him to be a little less aggressive with his hand holding? Even with zero experience in acting or stage direction, I could see he was far too intense.

But my heart jumped when Tami held up her hand in the middle of the next line and halted the scene, right as Liam was leaning forward, his lips targeting Tami’s. My ears were on high alert listening in on the conversation, Tami expressing her disapproval they’d be kissing on their first rehearsal of the scene as if it wasn’t the norm in Hollywood. And I wholeheartedly agreed that she and Liam didn’t need to physically kiss in rehearsal. Totally unnecessary. Liam whispered something to her, something which made him smile, but Tami remained stoic and continued her discussion with Ayesha, standing up for herself and clearly not keen on kissing Liam.

Question marks flashed in my brain—why did she not want to kiss him? After all, it was an integral part of the script. Romeo and Juliet was the ultimate in love stories, encompassing love at first sight, forbidden romance and tragedy.

Romeo’s boldness in declaring his love before exchanging names and learning they were mortal enemies was something to admire, for sure. Perhaps it was the lower life expectancy in medieval times that led men to act impulsively, Romeo wasting no time in arranging to marry Juliet less than twenty four hours after meeting. That was either confidence or supreme stupidity, and I’m not sure there was a difference.

I joined in the conversation over the Lego build, quite impressed by what the team had started under Devin’s supervision. Teams had between four to six members, with a total of twenty kids participating. It doubled the amount in the Lego Club, so we had to see it as a gain, albeit small.

As the team packed up and carefully carried their creation back to storage, I disappeared from the group and made my way to the back of the stage, picking up a discarded cardboard placard to make it look like I had some kind of purpose.
